As concerns grow over the current Cyclospora outbreak, many people are wondering how to wash produce during a Cyclospora outbreak and whether rinsing fruits and vegetables is enough to keep them safe. While several recalls have been announced during the investigation, health officials have not yet confirmed a positive source of contamination.
You may have heard reports involving Taylor Farms. However, as of the time this article was written, the FDA reported that the positive test result was determined to be a false positive, meaning no confirmed contamination has been identified. Until investigators identify the true source, practicing good food safety habits remains one of the best ways to reduce your risk.
The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to lower your risk. The bad news is that many of the produce washing methods shared online simply aren’t effective against Cyclospora.
Why Cyclospora Is So Difficult to Remove
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that produces hardy eggs, called oocysts, which are remarkably resistant to many common cleaning methods. Several characteristics make this parasite particularly difficult to remove from fresh produce.
Tiny Size
Cyclospora oocysts are microscopic and can settle into tiny crevices and porous areas on fruits and vegetables. Their small size allows them to hide in places that are difficult to reach with routine washing.
Sticky Surface
The parasite readily adheres to the surface of produce, especially fruits and vegetables with textured surfaces or fine hairs. Foods such as raspberries and leafy greens provide ideal surfaces for Cyclospora to cling to, making a quick rinse far less effective.
Protective Outer Wall
Cyclospora has a tough outer shell that protects it from many substances commonly used to clean produce. Unfortunately, this means it is highly resistant to vinegar, baking soda, chlorine, and many commercially available produce washes.
Common Produce Washing Methods: What Works—and What Doesn’t
Many popular produce cleaning methods are excellent for removing dirt, debris, pesticides, or certain bacteria. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean they work against Cyclospora.
Running Water
Thoroughly rinsing produce under cool running water is still recommended. The mechanical action of the water can remove some Cyclospora organisms from the surface of fruits and vegetables. However, washing with water alone does not reliably eliminate the parasite.
While rinsing isn’t perfect, you should never skip this step because it still reduces contamination and removes other unwanted debris.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is effective at removing certain pesticide residues and may help reduce some bacteria and fungi. However, research has not shown baking soda to effectively kill or detach Cyclospora oocysts from produce.
Vinegar
Vinegar is one of the most commonly recommended home remedies for washing fruits and vegetables, but current evidence does not support its effectiveness against Cyclospora. While vinegar may reduce some microorganisms, it has not been shown to reliably eliminate this parasite.
Should You Mix Vinegar and Baking Soda?
Many people combine vinegar and baking soda because the bubbling reaction looks like it is actively cleaning produce. In reality, when these two ingredients are mixed together, they largely neutralize one another. The fizzing may be satisfying to watch, but it does not make them more effective against Cyclospora—and may actually reduce the benefits each provides when used separately.
Chlorine Washes
Food-grade chlorine solutions are commonly used in commercial food production. However, the concentrations considered safe for use on food are not strong enough to reliably kill Cyclospora. Higher concentrations could damage the food and pose health risks, making them unsuitable for home use.
Mechanical Scrubbing
Mechanical scrubbing, especially when paired with an approved food-safe sanitizer, appears to remove more contamination than rinsing alone. Unfortunately, many high-risk foods—such as leafy greens and berries—are too delicate to scrub effectively.
This method is best reserved for produce with firm outer surfaces, including:

Cantaloupe

Citrus fruits
-
Cucumbers
-
Potatoes
-
Squash
Even then, scrubbing reduces contamination but does not guarantee complete removal.
Ultraviolet (UV) Light
Ultraviolet (UV) light is an emerging area of research and may eventually become another tool for reducing Cyclospora contamination. While early studies appear promising, additional research is needed before UV light can be recommended for routine household use.
The Only Proven Way to Kill Cyclospora
At this time, there is only one consistently proven method for eliminating Cyclospora from contaminated food: heat.
Cooking food to an internal temperature of 158°F (70°C) destroys the parasite and provides the highest level of protection. While cooking isn’t practical for every fruit or vegetable, it remains the only method shown to completely inactivate Cyclospora.
Additional Ways to Reduce Your Risk
Although no washing method is foolproof, combining several food safety practices can significantly reduce your overall risk of exposure.
Wash Your Hands
Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling fresh produce. This simple habit helps reduce cross-contamination and prevents microorganisms from spreading to other foods, utensils, and kitchen surfaces.
Stay Up to Date on Food Recalls
Although investigators have not identified a confirmed source of the current outbreak, iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico remains under investigation. Continue monitoring FDA updates and avoid consuming products included in any future recalls.
Peel Produce When Possible
Peeling fruits and vegetables removes the outer layer where contamination is most likely to occur. While peeling lowers your risk, it is not a perfect solution. If the skin has been damaged before peeling, Cyclospora may already be present beneath the surface.
For the best results, first rinse the outside of the produce under running water, then peel it to reduce the chance of transferring contaminants from the skin to the edible portion.
The Bottom Line
Until investigators identify the source of the current Cyclospora outbreak, reducing your exposure comes down to smart food safety practices rather than relying on internet myths.
Wash all produce thoroughly under running water, peel fruits and vegetables whenever practical, and cook foods to 158°F (70°C) whenever possible. Although these measures cannot guarantee complete protection, they can substantially reduce your risk.
If you develop prolonged watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, or unexplained weight loss after eating fresh produce, don’t ignore your symptoms. Cyclosporiasis—the illness caused by Cyclospora—is treatable with prescription antibiotics, but symptoms can last for weeks without appropriate treatment.
