The kitchen is one of the easiest places to make meaningful changes.
Replace Plastic Food Storage
Store leftovers in glass containers whenever possible. Glass doesn’t leach chemicals into food and can safely be used in the microwave and dishwasher.
If you prefer lightweight options, stainless steel containers are another excellent choice.
Ditch Non-Stick Cookware
Traditional non-stick cookware often contains PFAS, commonly referred to as “forever chemicals.”
As your cookware needs replacing, consider switching to:

Ceramic-coated cookware (from reputable manufacturers)
These alternatives are durable and eliminate one common source of PFAS exposure.
Filter Your Drinking Water
Depending on where you live, drinking water may contain PFAS and other contaminants.
Reverse osmosis systems generally remove the widest range of contaminants, while high-quality activated carbon filters can also reduce many chemicals.
Don’t Heat Food in Plastic
Heating food in plastic containers increases the migration of certain chemicals into food.
Whenever possible:

Heat food in glass or ceramic dishes.

Skip microwaving plastic containers, even if they’re labeled microwave safe.

Many personal care products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals, particularly fragrances.
Choose Fragrance-Free Products
“Fragrance” on an ingredient label can represent dozens—or even hundreds—of undisclosed chemicals.
Studies have found that women who regularly use perfume have significantly higher phthalate exposure than women who do not. Leave-on products, such as lotions and perfumes, generally contribute more exposure than rinse-off products.
When possible, look for products labeled:

Buy Organic When It Makes Sense
Buying everything organic isn’t realistic for most families.
Instead, prioritize organic versions of produce on the Environmental Working Group’s annual Dirty Dozen list, which identifies fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide residues.
For produce on the Clean Fifteen list, conventionally grown options are generally considered lower in pesticide residues and may be a good way to save money.
Wash Fresh Produce
Even if you buy conventional produce, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly helps remove dirt, bacteria, and some surface pesticide residues.
Although washing won’t eliminate pesticides that have entered the plant itself, it’s still a worthwhile habit. A vinegar or baking soda solution may help remove additional surface residues before rinsing thoroughly with clean water.

Your home can also be a source of unnecessary chemical exposure.
Leave Shoes at the Door
Shoes track pesticides, heavy metals, lawn chemicals, and other contaminants into your home.
Removing shoes before entering is an easy habit that helps keep those contaminants off your floors, carpets, furniture, and out of reach of children and pets.
Choose Furniture Carefully
When purchasing new furniture, carpets, or rugs, consider products made without stain-resistant or water-resistant chemical treatments whenever possible.
These coatings may contain PFAS and other chemicals designed to repel stains but that can persist in the environment.
Limit Indoor Pesticides
Rather than routinely spraying insecticides around your home, focus on prevention.
Seal entry points, eliminate standing water, keep food properly stored, and use screens on windows and doors.
If pest control is needed, consider less-toxic options before reaching for stronger chemical products.
Consider Wet Cleaning Instead of Dry Cleaning
Traditional dry cleaning often uses chlorinated solvents.
When available, professional wet cleaning is a gentler alternative that reduces exposure to these chemicals while still caring for delicate clothing.
Progress Over Perfection
Reducing your exposure to endocrine disruptors isn’t about fear or perfection—it’s about making informed choices when you have the opportunity.
You don’t need to throw away every plastic container today or replace every cosmetic in your bathroom. Instead, make one small change at a time. Replace products as they wear out, choose healthier alternatives when your budget allows, and remember that consistency matters more than perfection.
While no single change can eliminate exposure entirely, gradually reducing your overall chemical burden may help support long-term hormone health as part of a healthy lifestyle.
